Everyone talks about it for weeks and plans big parties and celebrations for the BIG day! But what do the Irish actually celebrate on the 17th of March each year??
Actually, the 17th of March is the death date of St. Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland, who lived c. AD (385 – 461). Since the 17th century, St.Patricks Day is an official feast day, celebrated by the Christians, and commemorates St.Patrick and the arrival of Christianity in Ireland, its culture and heritage.
What is it with the colour Green??
According to history, St. Patrick used a three-leaved shamrock to explain the holy trinity to the Irish. Therefore, the green became the associated colour for the Irish culture. Also, the old flag of Ireland with the harp has been green.
What to do in Dublin on St. Patricks Day??
Actually, St.Patrick’s Day is celebrated over four days. Its starts on the evening of the 16th and ends on the 19th of March. Nevertheless, Friday the 17th is still the main day of celebration. On this day, Dublin turns into a large Festival city with parades, music, outdoor cinemas, street theaters and of course lots of open pubs and clubs. This year’s motto is “Ireland You Are”.
